Our Teachers
The WLAC computer science and applications faculty has tremendous experience, both in the classroom and as practicing industry professionals, and have extensive knowledge in their areas of expertise.
Charles Stapleton, Chairperson
Professor Stapleton has served the Los Angeles community in law enforcement for over 30 years. During that period, his assignments included uniform patrol, assistant watch commander, public relations and an investigator for the Anti-Terrorist Unit.
He has also been a college professor for 30 years at the Los Angeles Community College and here at West Los Angeles College. In addition, he has worked with the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security helping to identify concerns and first responder training needs.
Ronald Engen
Professor Engen has 30 years of experience with the Los Angeles Police Department serving in the patrol, traffic and administration departments. He also holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Pepperdine University and is a graduate of the National Defense University.
Ronald Engen has also taught at WLAC for over 30 years and has presented combat training at the FBI.
Raymond Jatkowski
Instructor Jatkowski is currently serving as a Sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department where he has been for over 20 years. Previously he served with the United States Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police in Washington D.C.
He has been an instructor with WLAC for over seven years.
Steve Vera
Instructor Vera is a 31 year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department serving in the patrol, arrest and control and SWAT units. He achieved the supervisor level for a period of seven years. Steve Vera has been an Instructor at WLAC for the last three years.
Frank Whyte
Professor Whyte has had a distinguished career with the Los Angeles Police Department for 39 years. During his career, he served with the patrol and detective divisions attaining supervisory level. He also worked in the LAPD academy as a use of force and firearms instructor. Frank Whyte was the Head Instructor at the Academy for a four year period.
He has taught at WLAC for two years and has also taught at UCLA and Chapman College.
Ronald Williams
Instructor Williams has served for 21 years with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills. Ronald Williams has taught at WLAC for two years.
George Yan
Associate Professor Yan has over thirty years of service with the Los Angeles County Probation Department where he is the Supervising Deputy Probation Officer in the Intake and Detention Control Unit at Central Juvenile Hall. Currently, he is the Director of Probation Training and the Coordinator of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) at WLAC.
